Nauru
Travel tips for Nauru: safety advisories, currency and cash vs. card, tap water, plugs, local phrases, food, and advice from travelers.
Cash and cards
Cash is essential. Cash dominates in Nauru, as card acceptance is extremely rare outside of a few major supermarkets. ATMs are scarce, have low withdrawal limits, and frequently run out of money, so travelers must bring enough Australian Dollars (AUD) in cash to cover their entire trip.
Try the food
- Coconut Fish: Freshly caught reef fish marinated and gently simmered in rich, freshly squeezed coconut milk.
- Noddy Bird: A traditional local delicacy of wild seabird that is typically roasted or deep-fried and served with rice.
- Pandanus Paste (Epo): A sweet, thick paste made from the fibrous segments of the pandanus fruit, often used as a snack or flavoring.
