Niue

Travel tips for Niue: safety advisories, currency and cash vs. card, tap water, plugs, local phrases, food, and advice from travelers.

Cash and cards

Carry some cash. Niue has zero ATMs, so bringing NZD cash is vital. Supermarkets and petrol stations take cards, but tour operators, car rentals, and markets are often cash-only. Bank counter withdrawals incur high fees.

Try the food

  • Coconut Crab (Uga): A massive, land-dwelling crab with incredibly rich and sweet meat, typically boiled or roasted.
  • Takihi: A traditional layered dish of thinly sliced taro and ripe pawpaw baked in rich coconut cream.
  • Raw Fish Salad (Ota Ika): Freshly caught ocean fish marinated in citrus juice and mixed with fresh coconut milk and vegetables.
