Tajikistan

Travel tips for Tajikistan: safety advisories, currency and cash vs. card, tap water, plugs, local phrases, food, and advice from travelers.

Cash and cards

Cash is essential. Tajikistan is heavily cash-based. While Visa cards work at large supermarkets and modern hotels in Dushanbe, cash is essential for markets, taxis, and traveling outside the capital, especially in the Pamir mountains where ATMs are scarce.

  • Sambusa (Самбӯса): Flaky, baked pastry triangles generously stuffed with minced meat, onions, and herbs.
